Excavation Supervisor (Ganger)

About the role

Guernsey Electricity is recruiting an Excavation Supervisor (Ganger) to supervise and lead the excavation and reinstatement works team delivering underground cable laying and duct work. The post holder runs the day-to-day operations of the team, handles issues that affect workflow and daily delivery targets, and acts as a key liaison with other sections, including the work scheduling function. Work takes place in varied environments, including on public roadways and in all weather, and reasonable fitness is required.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and manage small teams and support the Excavation Team Lead in executing corporate strategy.
• Manage all aspects of site work, including quality control of delivery and completion ('making good').
• Handle on-site health and safety, including submitting RAMS and accident reports where required, and ensure excavation sites remain safe during and outside working hours.
• Ensure timesheets and service orders are completed on time, draw materials from stores and make minor purchases, and maintain tools and minor plant.
• Operate excavation tools and machinery and dig by hand; deal impartially with minor personnel issues.
• Comply with local legislation on health and safety, equal opportunities and data protection, and perform other allocated duties.

Required profile

• Guernsey driving licence.
• At least 5 years of proven experience in a similar role; Street Works qualification preferred.
• First-line management experience of small teams and plant and machinery training and experience.
• Ability to solve problems, identify risks early and motivate teams to meet delivery deadlines.
• Must be able to do all aspects of the role, including heavy lifting.
