Apprentice Substation Fitter

About the role

This apprenticeship offers hands‑on training to become a qualified Substation Fitter, working with low‑voltage (LV) and high‑voltage (HV) electrical plant, cabling, and control systems. All training, including a City & Guilds Level 2/3 qualification, is provided.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in the installation and maintenance of cables, control systems, switchgear and transformers to high safety and reliability standards.
• Participate in on‑site safety training, risk assessments and the preparation of safety documentation.
• Support fault‑finding activities and corrective work on electrical plant and equipment.
• Help plan jobs by conducting site visits, organising resources and liaising with customers.
• Contribute to the installation of new plant and modifications to improve performance.
• Lead small working parties for specific tasks, ensuring safe working practices.
• Perform LV operations such as removal/replacement of distribution fuses and links.
• Comply with local health & safety, equal opportunities and data protection legislation.
• Participate in a formal standby rota once training is completed.

Required profile

• Good standard of education and eligibility for a City & Guilds Level 2 or 3 apprenticeship (including distance learning).
• Very high attention to detail, as work is safety‑critical.
• Willingness to travel for training in the UK (travel and accommodation costs covered).
• Commitment to develop a strong understanding of Guernsey Electricity’s structure, mission and strategies.
